Many American communities face persistent environmental and energy challenges, particularly in those with a high proportion of minority or socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals. This results in limited access to engineering and scientific expertise in high-need areas.
Darshan Karwat, assistant professor for engineering at The Polytechnic School, one of the six Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University, will lead various efforts to address these disparities. Efforts include enabling engineering and science academic researchers with the skills, resources and knowledge to conduct research in support of these communities. As a result, underserved communities could benefit from the academic researchers’ specialized expertise and therefore have an increased opportunity at identifying and collaboratively addressing critical environmental needs in communities.
