First-year Funding Opportunities

Dean's Fellowship

  • Offered through the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering
  • Provides full tuition, health insurance, and an annual stipend
  • Candidates must be a first-year PhD student with an engineering undergraduate degree from a major state university or top private college
  • Fellowship awarded prior to first term of enrollment and is a competitive process
  • Deadline: Must apply to one of our engineering PhD programs by December 31
  • No fellowship application required; all newly admitted students are evaluated

Interdisciplinary Enrichment Fellowship

  • Offered through Graduate College
  • For New Master’s or Doctoral Students
  • Doctoral Enrichment Fellowship supports newly-admitted first-year doctoral Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) graduate students who demonstrate academic excellence and are underrepresented in their field of study. Students must be nominated by their admitting academic unit.
  • Funding amount: $17,000 plus tuition during the first year of study

Completion Funding Opportunities

Completion Fellowship

  • Offered through the Graduate College office
  • Completion Fellowships are intended to support student’s degree completion of PhD and MFA. Nominees must be officially advanced to candidacy at the time of nomination, in good academic standing, and finishing their doctoral or MFA degree by the end of the semester.
  • Funding: One-semester stipend (fall or spring) of $8,550 (this will not include tuition and health insurance)

Dissertation Fellowship

  • Dissertation Fellowships are competitive university-wide fellowships designed to support highly meritorious doctoral students who are in the final stages of post-candidacy doctoral work.
  • Funding amount: stipend plus tuition during the final year of study

Travel Funding Opportunities

Individual Travel Grant

  • Offered through the Graduate & Professional Student Association
  • Covers the costs of airfare, fuel/mileage if driving your own vehicle, ground transportation (taxi, shuttle services, trains, public transportation), hotels/lodging, meals, and event registration.
  • Funding amount: Maximum of $950 per academic year
  • Deadline: No later than 11:59pm AZ time on the first day of the month prior to the month of departure.

American Fellowships (Women Scholars)
  • AAUW LogoOffered through the American Association of University Women (AAUW)
  • AAUW American Fellowships support women scholars who are completing dissertations, planning research leave from accredited institutions, or preparing research for publication. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Scholars engaged in science, technology, engineering, and math fields or researching gender issues are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Funding amount: $6,000 – $30,000

Dr. Louise M. Berman Fellows Award
  • Offered through Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education (KDP)
  • Enables Fellows to conduct research that will: advance the field of education to promote growth and development; promote ethical decision-making in educational settings; creatively explore social justice issues and the study of the human condition; foster collaboration on major education initiatives to create an open dialogue among people of all races, ages, genders, and abilities; or propose future direction for educational leadership in a range of settings.

  • Funding amount: $1,200 – $1,800

Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs

Fulbright U.S. Student Program
  • Fulbright LogoProvides grants for individually designed study/research projects. A candidate will submit a Statement of Grant Purpose defining activities to take place during one academic year in a participating country outside the U.S.
  • Master’s and doctoral candidates are welcome to apply and must demonstrate the capacity for independent study or research, together with a general knowledge of the history, culture, and current events of the countries to which they are applying.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP)

  • Each Fellowship consists of three years of support during a five-year fellowship period. Currently, NSF provides a stipend of $34,000 to the Fellow and a cost-of-education allowance of $12,000 to the graduate degree-granting institution for each Fellow who uses the fellowship support in a fellowship year.
